Shocker: Legitimate sales calls to Meals on Wheels groups are great opportunities. We understand that old school Meals on Wheels organizations generally view sales calls as a burden or a disruption. However, we are here to tell you that legitimate sales calls are incredibly important to take and treat professionally especially if you are a Meals on Wheels organization. The reason is that legitimate sales calls from reputable individuals may be more than just a really nice person with a good service or product but may also be your next board member, newsletter subscriber, donor, grant provider, advocate, money saver, corporate sponsor, friend or volunteer.
First, lets speak openly and honestly here. Part of the problem with phone calls are that many Meals on Wheels organizations we have experience with lack proper training to help their staff identify legitimate sales calls from scams. We can’t obviously provide you with a complete training session via a BLOG but for starters here is our most important training tip we teach. Legitimate sales phone calls generally have these three elements making them easy to identify: (1) The sales person when asked or if they leave a voicemail, will gladly and without hesitation provide you with their Name, Title, E-Mail Address, Website and Phone Number. (2) The sales person calling ideally should be (if they really want your business and are serious about sales) named on their website and their email address should clearly identify them and associate them with their website URL. (3) A good and legitimate sales call should always be followed up with an email. The email should always have their Name, Title, Mailing Address, E-Mail Address, Website URL and Phone Number. Next, these standards are just logical ones to apply and are not full-proof but our group has been using these three principals for many years and they have never failed us to date.
If your Meals on Wheels organization needs training on how to take and identify legitimate sales calls and how to make them potentially very beneficial, please email or calls us for further assistance.
In a upcoming BLOG post we will explain that if you are not logging the calls to your organization and routinely reviewing them, you may be in for a terrible surprise.
